"Morning Glory" Might Really Brighten Up Your Day.

With a very catchy soundtrack and characters that will keep you on your toes with entertainment, "Morning Glory" is a great take on media journalism.

The show will capture your attention from the first moment you meet the main character Becky, played by Rachel McAdams. A plucky young deteremened woman who is set on being a broadcasting editor. Her character depicts many of the realities that might be involved in such a job. Having no husband, kids, or a boyfriend, her job is literally her world.

Curious If you should go see morning glory?

The show does kind of give a misconception that news media is boring. By having the television morning show that Becky is trying to keep from going under characterizes news media, specifically daily morning shows, as being a more suburban house wife show that many might consider boring.

Despite this the movie does bring up a good contrast between "News" and ""Media". Being that the argument for part of the movie depicts Mike, Harrison Ford, as a grumpy old news journalist who now feels that his new role in media journalism is beneath him.

The movie follows the journey of both Beth and Mike and her pursuit of proving to him that journalism media is still news worth reporting.

It may not change your entire perspective on journalism or news media. But it might very well give you a higher respect for those who are in the media business and strive to make it better.

READ IT: "The Corpse Had a Familiar Face" by Edna Buchanan

It might be the personal way that Buchanan talks to the reader or it might be the indepth details that she gives to her stories. Either way, Enda Buchanan's book The Corpse Had A Familiar Face is practically impossible to put down.

It may sound like just another book about Crime in Miami but the way Buchanan covers the journalism seen in the Miami of her time makes the reader think about a little bit more than just crime.

Being a Journalist is harder than it seems. At least it was for Buchanan. In her book she covers how she was constantly at different crime sceens that might not have considered appropriate for a woman reporter at that time to have been attending. Or how she constantly was chasing after one story or another.

"I often joke that my job keeps me single and celebate" She states in one chapter. It's a hard job that you have to have the right passion for.

Buchanana's book also encourages the reader to never give up. She describes how she has always been very persistant. Whether it was trying to get the reporting job she wanted or if it was to help solve a missing person's report she was always on the look out.

"I fee haunted by the restless souls of those whose killers walk free" she states at the beginning of the book.

Not all good guys are good and not all bad guys are bad. Cops can be charged with rape and murder just like any other guy. A man running from the law might also be a loveing father and husband. It is these different perspectives that give Buchanan's writing a fresh outlook on things.

"It Don't mean a thing if it aint got that swing....."

Swing high and swing low, or at least that was the theme at Sunday's Corvallis Swing Dance with the Company B Jazz Band.

Walking around down town on Sunday the 24th you might have heard some of there jumpin beats streaming from the upstairs windows of Odd Fellows Hall above New Morning Bakery. People from all over Oregon came to attend this hoppin dance. Including Coyle Parker from Portland who taught the lesson before the dance.

With a sliding scale for the price at the door, between $7 and $15, it was a very well attended dance.
"I don't want anyone to say the didn't come because it was too expensive, so I told people to pay what they felt like they could afford in that price range" said Phil Manijak the Swing Club Coordinator.

WAIT! I Need to Catch That Bus!

How did you make it to class today? Who would have thought that just getting to class on time would be so hard. For many students transportation is the reason they either did or did not make it to class. Stuck on the side of the road for an hour i experienced this first hand. I luckily have tripple A and was safely returned home but I was left with the delemma of how I was then going to start going to school for the rest of the week. Thanks to the LBCC Transportation page I was able to locate the schedule for the Linn Benton Loop Bus.

This was great! I found a way to get to my class the next day. Only problem......none of the stops were remotely near where I lived. The LB Bus Loop is literally a small loop from LBCC to corvallis going from Harrison to 9th, then from 9th to Circle, and then from Highway 20 back into albany and back to LBCC.

I eventually found a way to get to the closest bus stop via the corvallis city bus but not without some confussion and missing my first bus wich led me to missing my first class of the day.

Flashing Sirons and Red Flags: the 3 things a Journalist should avoid

Who the **** thinks that the president is a good guy? Why in the world would anyone vote for him. He was caught saying "dying puppies are fun to watch" and his wife has been convicted of murder. It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. (This is a fabricated paragraph in order to give an example of wrongful journalism and is in no way aimed to give an opinion or statement of truth about the president)

Three Fatal Mistakes. All three of which can be found in the above paragraph. Opinionated Bias, Fabrication, and Plagiarism. And all three of which could get a journalist into a great deal of trouble. Before publishing any kind of story Journalist always needs to be very aware of what they are writing and any liabilities that could be involved if handed out to the public.

What's so wrong with the above paragraph? Seems like it's just someone stating what they think about the president. EXACTLY. It's opinion based. The first sentence could not only be considered offensive for it's language but it also has no facts to back it up. It is completely a matter of opinion.Alfred C. Kinsey stated "We are recorders and reporters of the facts- not judges of the behavior we describe"

Then what about the frabrication? Did the president really state that he likes to watch dying puppies? Is the first lady really a murderer? Of course not. All of these things were a fabrication. A lie or according to dictionary.com it's an untruthful statement. From the textbook Inside Reporting John Hersey was quoted writing "There is one sacred rule of journalism, the writer must not invent. The legend on the license must read: None of this was made up."

Lastly the worst journalistic sin of them all: Plagiarism. The claim that something someone else had written was your own handywork. The last sentence in the beginning paragraph is actually plagiarized from the Martin Luther King Jr. "I have a dream" speech. The reason this is considered plagiarized is because it was neither quoted or acknowledged as someone else's statement. This makes the reader assume that it was written by the journalist. There are plagiarism and copyright laws that could cause a journalist to go to court if caught.

So what's the simple solution to writing a good article? Know all of your facts and cite all of your sources.
